USA WEEKEND’s gone to the dogs this week. On Tuesday, we had this post featuring interviews with the human stars of the new canine-filled flick Marley & Me (in theaters Christmas Day), and in the magazine this weekend, we have a piece written exclusively for us by Marley & Me author John Grogan about life with his new pup, Woodson. Check it out and then tell us: Who is your favorite dog from the movies?

The Wizard Of Oz is my fave movie. So of course I voted Toto. Plus he is adorable. I think Bolt is cool, too.
My favorite movie dog is Old Yeller! I have the movie and it always makes me cry…
My husband too!
My very favorite dog is Chance from Homeward Bound. He’s an American Bulldog and absolutely gorgeous. I have loved the breed ever since. Truely awesome dogs. Great article.
We have thought of a bunch of other movie dogs. For example Beethoven the St. Bernard, Snoopy from the Peanuts and Underdog. We also thought how Toto is not even a main character in The Wizard of Oz.
Good Morning, All
I really enjoy all dog movies to a point where I make the effort to find the dvd’s of the movie and purchase them if they’re available in the store.
I am just awed by how intelligent these animals are and appreciated the movie producers for willing to do movies with dogs as the main characters.
As for Woodson, thank you John Grogan for the great article and Woodson will really love you for not returning him back to his breeder.
Aloha from Hawaii and Happy Holidays,
gladys
As a child I lived to watch Lassie every week. I begged my parents to let me have a collie, but they never allowed pets. I vowed I would own a collie as an adult and I have had two and named the first one Lassie. It was so worth the wait.
Marley is the funniest dog I have ever read about.
You youngsters don’t remember RinTinTin. We’ve had German Shepherds ever since because of him.
How about “SKIP” from the movie “My dog Skip” and the book by Willie Morris? A touching tale of growing up in Yazoo City, Ms in the 1940′s. Skip was a fox terrier.
In review of the comments- I read Dr. Epstein’s and my mixed breed dog Chance (Lab, Husky, Pit, and finally Sheppard all rolled in one) was born w/congenital hip dysplasia. My regular vet was not very hopeful, but I was given the name of an orthopaedic vet in Overgaard, AZ. He did a wonderful job on fixing up one of Chance’s hips. The other leg need an ACL repair thus I haven’t even gone into that hip side yet. I need to watch his weight, but just like John says- he is part of my animal kingdom and I won’t put him down!
I forgot another- Hooch! From Turner and Hooch. I had a love, laugh and cry relationship with that movie. Tom Hanks had me rolling at times…the humor and also the wonderful instincts that dog had for being able to sense the criminal.
Hi
I grew up watching PETIE(one black eye pitbull) from “Little Rascals Our Gang” movies every day after school. Also don’t forget Hooch from “Turner & Hooch”. But I must say Rin Tin Tin was our family’s all time favorite. So much that we had two Rin Tin Tin Shepherds of our own.
No doubt in my mind is Ol Yella!
I have that movie and it has me crying each time I watch it.
AND WE CAN’T FORGET MARLEY!
I BOUGHT THE BOOK AND COULD HARDLY BRING MYSELF TO PUT IT DOWN WHEN IT WAS TIME TO GO TO SLEEP.
WE HAD A GOLDEN RETRIEVER AS A PET AND THERE ARE CERTAIN BREEDS OF DOGS THAT JUST WARM YOUR HEART.
IT HAS TO BE ASTA, DOG OF NICK AND NORA CHARLES.
they should have more shows like lassie on tv today.
Asta is my favorite.
My favorite dog of all time, bar none, has to be Lassie. Many gave examples of her rescuing Timmy. What of her adventures with Ranger Rick on The Wonderful World of Disney? I still hear the theme music these 35 years later.
I loved Lassie, but Old Yeller was right up there with her,and Rin Tin Tin was my favorite. How could anyone not love Rinty?
Lassie is the top dog of all time. I also have fond memories of Rin Tin Tin, Big Red, and Old Yeller.
Lassie is my favorite, but loved all of them.Read the book Marley and me.Loved that too.I`m sure the movie will be a big hit.
I agree, OLD YELLER was the best dog and the best movie! No doubt about ….True, it’s probably an oldie to some..
For me, it’s a tie between RIN TIN TIN and NEIL of the Topper Series. Rinty was a handsome hero, and Neil made me laugh.
Rin Tin Tin
rin tin tin … he was the most awesome dog
Yep…Old Yeller…hands down!!!
How about Old Dan and Little Ann from “Where the Red Fern Grows”.
Skip from my dog skip
RIN TIN TIN, MY GRANDPA THOUGHT HE WAS THE GREATEST DOG EVERY !!!!!
LASSIE IS MY FAVORITE I GREW UP WATCHING HER!
I think that more people should pick bolt hes cool also miley is she has an awesome voice! lalalaalalalalalala fun fun
I have no specific favorite – all the dog stories warm my heart and some bring tears. What a dog or cat brings to a household in joy is unmeasurable. We rescued a goofy cocker spanial 5 years ago – he was our 4th cocker over the years – this little white and brown dog is the happiest and funniest of all the dogs we have had and daily brings us smiles and companionship unconditionally! I feel sorry for parents who do not allow their children to grow up with a pet – they are missing one of the most important segments of their life.
Winn Dixie from Because of Winn Dixie – it was a nice movie and I have a special regard for homeless dogs – way too many of them in our throw away society.
Rin Tin Tin is my favorite, right after my three Sibes
Rin Tin Tin the dog who saved Warner Brothers from going under.
She is the newest member of my family, and she’s my top dog. Xena is a rescue from a shelter, and she is a three year old German Shepherd, and she is the love of my life, and I’m glad that I have her.
I LOVE THIS STORY! WONDERFUL
Sure, Higgins/Benji was smarter than most of humanity, and Lassie goes for help when Timmy falls down yet another well, but Ol’ Yeller fought a bear to save that horrible child. And then he fought off a rabid wolf to save the women-folk. How can you beat that?
My favorite dog fromt he movies, by far, is Ole Yeller. I saw that movie when I was a kid and I cried for two days. I could never watch the movie again but I did like it. I believe it was the Disney version on the Wonderful World of Color.
oops, spelling mistake: dog is Old Yeller
my favorite doll of all time: OLD YELLER!
My favorite dog from the movies is Air Bud. The reason is simple: my wife, son and I are golden retriever fans. In fact, we are on our fourth one.
I vote for Neil, the alcoholic Saint Bernard on the Topper series.
my favorite movie dog is lady the cocker spaniel in lady and the tramp because she is so sweet and easy to give a kiss to and she set a example for all other disney dogs in succeeding years, both animated and live-action. lady is the best because she rocks.
I liked the St. Bernard in Kue Joe the exciting movie for sure.

rin tin tin
Best dog? Gotta be Jerry Lee. Any of these other mutts get to sleep with both Mel Harris and the poodle of his dreams.
Having read John Grogan’s heartwarming yet sad story of his puppy, Woodson, let me offer some advice. I practiced veterinary medicine for 42 years, and I had seenmany dogs with hip dysplasia, the condition Mr. Grogan describes in his article.
May I recommend a dietary product called PROZYME. this is a combination that contained four digestive enzymes which works wonders in many medical probkems that seem impervious to other treatments. How it works is still a mystery. However, I have used it successfully in may cases of dysplasia!
Containing no harmful enzymes, it can
