I love when my friend Tom O’Neil, the force behind the awards-obsessed Gold Derby Blog, does the math for me. As Tom reports today, 18 of the 19 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees are repeated in the nominations for Oscar that were announced this morning. Which means winners at this weekend’s SAG Awards might be good picks in your office Oscar pool.
Because I’m interested in the personalities as much as the awards, I look at nominations with an eye toward what the red carpet show might bring. This year, it’s going to be great. At least when it comes to the women, and let’s be real, we don’t really watch for the guys. There is no more glamorous a couple available than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, so they will reign at both awards shows, as nominees in best acting categories. It may not be either’s year to win, but it sure is their year to enjoy. (Last year at the SAG Awards, she was just showing with those twins; this year, she’s sure to be sexy and sophisticated.)
But every one of the actresses nominated in lead and supporting categories is gorgeous and designers will be dying to dress them. I love that Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway — who made The Devil Wears Prada a blockbuster movie — are nominated together and I hope they present together, too. Streep can be hit or miss when it comes to fashion, but Hathaway never errs. Nor does Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz or Amy Adams. Pitt will have little competition when it comes to gorgeous men. Josh Brolin and Robert Downey Jr. are handsome enough, and Frank Langella certainly had his day, but Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn and Philip Seymour Hoffman aren’t known for their sartorial splendor. So we’ll leave it to Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins to get inspired.
