Comic-Con 2010: Preview Night strikes but no need to feel left out

XXX D COMIC CON POSTER 17We are officially at Comic-Con International! We hope all of our readers are ready for five days of epic pop-culture news, scoop and interviews. If you missed any of our Comic-Con coverage so far this week, check it out with this link. And if you’re on Twitter, you can follow our USA WEEKEND flagship feed for highlights as well as my feed, which is for the hardcore fans who want to know EVERYTHING that is going on. So get ready for some tweeting from Preview Night tonight. Remember: Starting today, we’re giving away copies of The Losers on DVD every day we’re at Comic-Con to five random people who RT our tweets that day (which have the #sdcc hashtag), and on Friday we’ll be giving five high-definition Blu-rays! We know you might not be able to be one of the 125,000 people checking out the latest in movies, TV and other genre of entertainment, and that’s why we’re out to give you the best coverage around. And if you’re all about owning your own little piece of pop-culture coolness and missing out on the trademark Comic-Con exclusives, we’re hit to help you out there, too. Read below for some exclusives that I can’t wait to see and that you’ll be able to get your hands on, too.

Hasbro, the toymaker behind G.I. Joe, Transformers and the current Marvel Universe toys, always have something really cool to unleash upon the con throngs. This year, they’re boasting two different action figures of Sgt. Slaughter, the pro wrestler who moonlighted as the Joes’ drill instructor back in the 1980s; a neat new version of the Transformers character Blaster, an Autobot tapedeck with his transforming tape buddies; and a new figure each of the two superheroes who will be stars of the Marvel Studios movie panel at Comic-Con, Thor and Captain America. Look for these soon after the con ends on Sunday on HasbroToyShop.com (supplies will probably be limited).

IMG_1398Masters of the Universe is a franchise that many people in their 30s are now returning to after collecting He-Man and other figures back in their childhoods. Mattel is good at serving this market with their Classics line and online-only exclusives. I had the chance to see their Comic-Con exclusive at Toy Fair in February — a two-pack with the evil Skeletor and Eternian dentist Mo-Larr, based on a skit from the Robot Chicken TV series — and it’s a must-have. (Mattel is also offering a pack with the little magical dude Orko and Prince Adam, He-Man’s alter-ego.) But cooler than that, however, is a massive set of action figures featuring the DC Comics starfishy villain Starro and five superheroes, including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Even better, the interactive package has lights and sounds, starring the voice of Kevin Conroy, the voice of the Caped Crusader on the animated Batman series of the ‘90s. These and more will be available in limited quantities on MattyCollector.com starting at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET) on Aug. 2.

Entertainment Earth is such a fun source of pop-culture stuff that you can order its TV-centric Comic-Con exclusives NOW. No need to wait till after the show! They’re boasting a pair of bobbleheads — one featuring the serial-killing dad of Dexter with his little bundle of joy, the other featuring crazy jungle Claire from Lost. Older fans can get their hands on Dark Shadows and Twilight Zone action figures, Lost lovers still missing their show can relive the beach meetings between Jacob and the Man in Black with a two-pack set, and grab your hands on Brock Samson, Dr. Venture and Henchmen figures from the cult Venture Bros. series on Cartoon Network.
