Q: What is the name of the actor who plays Tom Selleck’s father on Blue Bloods? Didn’t he appear as Luther a number of times on Magnum, P.I.?

K. Linebrink, Middletown, Ohio

Len Cariou, 72, stars as dad Henry Reagan to Selleck’s Frank Reagan on the CBS police drama — even though he’s only five years older than Selleck. Cariou is a longtime character actor who has appeared recently in Damages and Brotherhood, and he earned an Emmy nomination for his role as Franklin D. Roosevelt in the HBO movie Into the Storm. It wasn’t Cariou, however, who co-starred with Selleck on Magnum, P.I. in the 1980s — that was Eugene Roche, who played visiting private eye Luther Ellis opposite Selleck’s mustached Thomas Magnum in five episodes. Roche died in 2004.
