Broadway Chats: Audra McDonald

With the Tony Awards and her fall wedding, McDonald, 41, is facing a double wardrobe crisis. “I’m not a girly girl, so dressing up is not something I love doing,” says the four-time Tony winner and a nominee for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical for Porgy & Bess. But the two-time Grammy winner’s 11-year-old daughter, Zoe, is “excited” to dress up for the big night. It was Zoe who inadvertently led her to her latest Tony nod. “I was leaving a job [in L.A.] to go home [to New York] and be a mom,” says the divorced McDonald of her exit from TV’s Private Practice. “I was leaving and jumping into the abyss and then just landed at home both on the stage and, quite literally, at home.”
